Four Tips For Eating Low-Carb At A Mexican Restaurant

Posted on

Many people do not realize how easy it is to eat low-carb when they go out to eat at a Mexican restaurant. While many of the dishes are packed full of carbs, it is possible to work your way around them if you go to the restaurant prepared to order the right things. The guide below walks you through a few tips to use the next time you want to eat low carb at a Mexican restaurant.

Ask for Your Favorite Dish as a Salad

Many people do not realize that most Mexican restaurants will be more than willing to accommodate a low-carb diet. If you have a dish that is simply your absolute favorite Mexican dish, ask to have it created as a salad rather than the carb filled dish it typically comes as. The restaurant can put the filling of burritos, tacos, or even enchiladas onto a bed of lettuce for you quickly and easily.

Fajitas Are Always a Good Option

Many people assume that fajitas are not a great low-carb option because of the tortillas that they come with. You can simply ask to have the dish with no tortillas or simply not eat them when they arrive to keep the dish lower in carbs. It is best to avoid eating too many of the onions because they can be a bit higher in carbs.

Ask for a Salad in Place of Rice and Beans

Rice and beans are loaded with carbohydrates. Many restaurants will allow you to get a small side salad in place of the rice and beans if you request it. If they will not accommodate this swap, simply ask to have the beans and rice left off of the plate so that you are not tempted to eat them.

Avoid the Queso at All Costs

You more than likely do not know that queso is often filled with carbs. Queso often has thickeners in it that contain a lot of carbs. To be safe, it is best to avoid the queso altogether to ensure that you are not eating carbs you do not know you are eating.

Planning ahead and being willing to ask for custom dishes will make eating low-carb at a Mexican restaurant easier. Many restaurants would rather you ask to have items left off of your plate rather than simply not eat them because it is less wasteful.
